Climate Science Resources

Scientists will be able to study events such as tropical storm Karl, which developed in the Atlantic in September 2016, using the OpenIFShome project. (Image: NASA Visible Earth, LANCE/EOSDIS Rapid Response team)

Climate Science Resources

If you are interested in finding out more about climate science and climate change, you might find the following online resources useful.

climateeducation.net

climateeducation.net is a global programme which aims to encourage the sharing of high quality information about climate science, modelling and the interpretation of climate change modelling experiments.

It does this by offering two short online courses and supporting an online community of knowledge sharing in regional climate prediction.

1. An Introduction to the Science of Climate and Climate Change

This free short course has been designed to give you an introduction to climate science and modelling, and how to go about interpreting the results of climate modelling experiments.

2. Constructing and Applying High Resolution Climate Scenarios

The second course is intended for those with a scientific background and who have completed course 1: An introduction to the science of climate and climate change (and achieved a score of 90% or more in the course test).

This tutor-supported online course aims to give students a good understanding of the issues surrounding producing, interpreting and applying predictive data, thereby giving users an insight into the most appropriate uses of regional climate model data.

To secure your place, please enrol at www.conted.ox.ac.uk/climatescience2. A course fee applies.

Realclimate.org

RealClimate is a commentary site on climate science by working climate scientists for the interested public and journalists.

They aim to provide a quick response to developing stories and provide the context sometimes missing in mainstream commentary.

RealClimate also have a useful page of resources about climate science.

IPCC FAQ

For the 4th Assessment Report in 2007, the IPCC Working Group I, which wrote the report on the Physical Basis of Climate Change, produced an FAQ to accompany their report.

The most recent report from the IPCC is the Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 ÂșC, which came out in 2018. You can read it online here.

Climate Central

Climate Central communicates the science and effects of climate change to the public and decision-makers. They are an independent organization of leading scientists and journalists researching and reporting the facts about our changing climate and its impact on the American public.

Climate Central surveys and conducts scientific research on climate change and informs the public of key findings. Our scientists publish and our journalists report on climate science, energy, sea level rise, wildfires, drought, and related topics.

Union of Concerned Scientists

The Union of Concerned Scientists has a large section on their website about global warming and what you can do about it.

Free Online Courses

As well as the free online course offered by Oxford University, there are several free online courses you can take, covering topics such as climate science and climate change.
