hello!
thank you for the offer!
forgive my ignorance, but Catalan is the form of Spanish spoken in the Barcelona area, is that correct?
it would be great if you could translate some pages (and point out any errors in the other Spanish pages).
maybe you could start with
climateprediction.net/index.php
/download/index.php
/download/participate.php
with many thanks and best wishes for the new year

About Catalan...

Postby mar » Mon Dec 29, 2003 4:15 pm

Hi Sylvia and everybody,

Just some information about catalan. Catalan is a language spoken by more of 6 milion people from eastern Spain, southern France and a city in Italy. It derived directly from latin as other languages as french, spanish, portugues, italian. In fact, catalan is older -the first catalan writings that remain are form the 11th century- and it have been strongly related with old southern french languages like occitan or provenzal that eventually have influenced a lot the french language as we know it right now.

The confusion results form the fact that spanish actually is not the name of a language. In the country Spain four different languages are spoken: catalan, euskera (also known as basc -a very old pre-indoeuropean language- this means probably more than 7000 years- talk by more than one milion people), galego (a dialect of portugues) and castillan -the language known by everybody as spanish. During the imperial times when the country was ruled by the Habsbourgh dinasty, Spain was something similar to a federation. Castilla was dominant at this time and performed alone the discovery and colonization of America. This is the reason castillian -known as spanish- is the only language from Spain spoken in America. Later, at the beginning of the XVIII century there was a hard war between the european powers form the succession in the spanish throne. After the war, a french dinasty, the borbons, came into power and they brought to Spain the centralized french style of governement. Since then, it has been a very hard time for the other nations in Spain and their corresponding languages, because they have been nearly continuosly prosecuted (this is the root, for instance, of the basc and catalan struggle for independence).

That's all right now. I hope to send some some of the traslation in the near future.

M.A.

P.S. I must apologize for my comment about the mistakes in the scientific terms of the spanish pages. In fact the mistakes were in some of the messages send to the Forum and related with the Spanish translation.

Hello people! Even I almost have no idea about climatics, I'd like to help translating ClimatePrediction to Catalan.

I'll send an e-mail to mar, and see what I can do.

In fact, Catalan is spoken by about 10 milion people, in Spain (Catalonia, Valencia and Balearic Islands), in France (Pyrenées Orientales department), in Italy (Alguero, Sardinia Island) and in Andorra. It is currently the seventh most spoken language in the European Union, and it has a very important weight in the Internet. Several programmes have been translated to our language (Microsoft programmes, eMule, OpenOffice, Mozilla, Panda Antiviruses, etc..).

Bye, and happy new year!!!
